John
McCarthy, founder of the Collegiate Basketball Invitational, is
currently the Director of the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball
Championship in Kansas City, MO. He was appointed to this position
in August of 2007. The NAIA Basketball Tournament is the original
college basketball national championship and was created by Dr.
James Naismith, Frank Cramer and Emil Liston in 1937 in the
newly-built Municipal Auditorium.
Previously, McCarthy created McCarthy Sports, Inc. in June of 2006.
Through McCarthy Sports, Inc., John handled various consulting
projects, created McCarthy Sports Travel and created the Collegiate
Basketball Invitational.
Formerly, he enjoyed an exciting, rewarding and very successful
career in college athletics. He has served in various capacities
within College Athletics, from Assistant Basketball Coach, Head
Basketball Coach, Athletic Development Director and, eventually,
Athletic Director.
In McCarthy’s last stint, as Athletic Director at Lynn University in
Boca Raton, FL, the Fighting Knights enjoyed tremendous success on
the fields of competition. During his tenure as Athletic Director,
Lynn University captured two NCAA National Championships, 10 NCAA
National Final Four finishes, many Sunshine State Conference regular
season and tournament championships and won back-to-back Mayor’s
Cups (Men’s Division) within the Sunshine State Conference – all
within four years as the Athletic Director.
With over 280 NCAA Division II schools, the Fighting Knights
improved in the NACDA Director’s Cup national standings each year
that McCarthy served as Athletic Director: 2002-03 (75th place);
2003-04 (48th place); 2004-05 (12th place); 2005-06 (10th place).
McCarthy served as the Chair of the South Region for the NCAA Men’s
Basketball Committee and was a member of the NCAA Division II Men’s
Basketball National Committee from 2004-06. He also was the Chair of
three Sunshine State Conference Committees: Marketing Committee
(2004-06), Officials Committee (2005-06) and the Sportsmanship Task
Force (2006). McCarthy was also a member of the Search Committee
that helped to hire Mike Marcil as the Commissioner of the Sunshine
State Conference.
Prior to Lynn University, McCarthy served as Head Basketball Coach
at Wilmington College in New Castle, DE. During the course of four
years as Head Coach, the Wildcats improved from nine wins his first
year to 19 wins in his fourth year, while his teams earned a 3.0 or
better grade point average every year. In his final year as Head
Coach with the Wildcats, McCarthy also was the Director of Student
Activities while also handling Job Placement and Housing for
Wilmington College.
Throughout the 1990’s, McCarthy has taught college courses at
Wilmington College, directed his own basketball camps, directed his
own basketball coaches clinics, served as Associate Editor of the
HoopScoop (national basketball publication based in Louisville),
written for various basketball publications and appeared as a
special guest on various radio stations.
McCarthy has been active in the community and has volunteered for
the American Cancer Society, Cystic Fibrosis, the George Snow
Scholarship Fund and the March of Dimes.
McCarthy holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History with a concentration
in Journalism from the University of Delaware and a Master’s Degree
in Sports and Athletic Administration from Lynn University. In
addition, McCarthy has gained additional education through NACDA’s
Leadership Conference (Atlanta, 2004) and through Leadership Boca
(Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, 2002).
McCarthy has been married to the former Christine Beach since July
of 2002 and together they have a wonderful son, Sean Patrick, who
was born August 27, 2003. The McCarthy’s currently reside in Kansas
City, MO.

Chris
Maxwell

Chris Maxwell founder of CLM Management Corp and Branch
Manager of FirstMerit Bank in Wadsworth Ohio is proud to
partner with John McCarthy and the Collegiate Basketball
Invitational. Over the past several years, Chris Maxwell has
been the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Structure
Personnel in Wadsworth Ohio. Recently, Maxwell accepted the
position of Branch Manager for the Wadsworth Crossing
location of FirstMerit Bank, which is slated to be completed
in mid March. Concurrently, Maxwell operates his own company
called CLM Management Corp, a small business management and
consulting firm, which helps small businesses grow. When
Maxwell is not working on the CBI or running his own
company, he also helps his father in his local bakery.
Maxwell is an avid supporter of the CBI and what it
represents. Maxwell was fortunate enough to participate in
the event last year as the Regional Director of
Sponsorships. It was through his hard work and dedication to
this event, that John McCarthy asked Maxwell to partner with
him to bring this first class event back to Wadsworth Ohio
for the next three years.
Maxwell is very active in his community. Recently he was
elected to Vice President of the Wadsworth Chamber of
Commerce. Maxwell is a proud supporter of Wadsworth City
Schools and their athletic programs. He also is a strong
supporter of Akron Children’s Hospital, Hospice of
Wadsworth, Akron Canton Regional Food bank and many other
charity organizations.
Maxwell is proud of his accomplishments and credits his
success to his Wife Sara. Maxwell and his wife (Sara) were
high school sweat hearts and they will be celebrating five
years of marriage this June. The couple is expecting their
first child, Alexa Anne in February. Maxwell is a 1999
Graduate of Wadsworth High School, where he studied
business. Chris and his wife Sara currently reside in Norton
OH. It is a goal for the Maxwell’s to move back to Wadsworth
in the next few years to carry on their Grizzly pride.

Don
Landry
Director of Operations

As the Director of Operations, Don Landry will be
responsible for all aspects of the players and coaches of
the CBI, including travel arrangements, team practice and
game schedules, social function arrangements, meeting
arrangements, etc. He will work with the Director of Special
Projects to oversee all aspects of game management,
including the table crew, officials, athletic trainers,
security, ball boys/girls, floor sweepers, announcements,
music, ticket takers, ushers, etc.
Don Landry’s career in athletics spans over four decades and
he has become one of the most respected and decorated
leaders within college athletics in the country.
During his career, Landry has served as the Head Basketball
Coach at Nicholls State University, Athletic Director at
Nicholls State University, Commissioner of the Southland
Conference and Commissioner of the Sunshine State
Conference. In addition, he has been the President of the
Division II Commissioner’s Association, Chairman of the
Division II National Basketball Committee and Chairman of
the Division II South Region Basketball Committee. Also, Mr.
Landry was the founder of both the Louisiana Association of
Basketball Coaches (LABC) and the Disney Tip Off Classic for
Division II Basketball. In his name, the LABC has
established the Don Landry Award for outstanding
contributions to Louisiana basketball.
Landry has won numerous honors, including election into the
Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame and the Nicholls State
Hall of Fame. He was selected as Mr. Louisiana Basketball in
1980 and has also received the Carl Maddox Award for
outstanding athletic administration. He has recently been
selected to the National Association of Collegiate Directors
of Athletics Hall of Fame (2006) and been awarded the
Commissioner’s Award of Merit (2006), which is the highest
honor from the Division II Collegiate Commissioner’s
Association.
Landry is now retired and resides with his longtime wife,
Lucille, in The Villages in central Florida.

J.D.
Hamilton
Director of Media

As
the Director of Media, J.D. is responsible for all aspects
of producing and printing the media guide. He will also
handle the web site for the event and issue all credentials,
including media, sponsors, professional teams/agents and
staff. J.D. will coordinate interviews during the event for
players, coaches and staff and will handle the media room
and post-game press conferences and other press conferences
for the CBI. He will serve as the media liaison with
television, radio and all working press in regards to the
tournament.
A 1994 graduate of the University
of Indianapolis,
J.D. has served as a member of the sports information staffs
at the University
of Indianapolis
(student assistant all four years), Ole Miss, Purdue,
Quincy
University, Horizon League
and IUPUI. In between IUPUI and his present job at a
non-profit organization, J.D. spent two years as an
assistant athletic director at
Cathedral High
School in Indy.
J.D. and his wife, Cindy, a kindergarten teacher, have been
married for 11 years and reside in
Indianapolis.

Steve
Moore
Director of Special Projects

As the Director of Special Projects, Steve Moore will handle
matters pertaining to the professional team representatives
and agents, while being in charge of video and photography
for the event. He will work with the Director of Operations
in regards to all game operations, including the table crew,
ticket takers, security, ushers, ball boys/girls, floor
sweepers, the national anthem, band activities, etc. Moore
will also coordinate the shipping of videos and pictures to
the proper entities, while also ensuring that the in-room
gifts are delivered to the hotel and arranged appropriately.
Steve Moore has served as the Athletic Director at Wadsworth
High School since 2002. Prior to heading the Grizzlies
Athletic Department, Moore served as the Athletic Director
and a teacher at Brunswick High School (2001-2002) and
Highland High School (1992-2001). He holds a Bachelor’s
Degree from Kent State University in Education and
Mathematics (1992) and a Master’s Degree from Akron
University in Secondary Administration (1997).
Moore, 37, is married to Jill Moore and together they have a
son (Matt, 6) and a daughter (Megan, 4).

Beth Workman
Director of Social Events

As the Director of Social Events, Workman will be
responsible for all aspects of the Tip Off Banquet, two
VIP/Sponsor Socials and the Saturday Afternoon Reception.
She will work with the Tournament Director, Sponsors, the
Galaxy Restaurant and various volunteers to make proper
arrangements for each function.
Workman currently serves
as the CEO of the Wadsworth (OH) Chamber of Commerce, as
position that she has held since 1994. Prior to her arrival
back in her hometown of Wadsworth, she was the Public
Relations Field Manager for Coors Brewing Company in Golden,
CO, for fifteen years. Workman's career also includes work
for Nationwide Insurance Company and Citizens Bank & Trust
Company.
Beth Workman is the proud recipient of the "Key to the City"
of Wadsworth, OH. She currently sits on four different
"Boards of Directors" and various event committees. She
holds a degree in Sales/Marketing from the University of
Denver at Red Rocks Campus and has 27 years of public
relations experience.
Along with husband Gregory Gummere, Workman resides in
Wadsworth, OH, with her two children, Adam (20) and Nicholas
(10).
