Game schedules for each CBI team are listed at the bottom of the team rosters.

KANSAS CITY, MO. Tuesday, April 9, 2008--- McCarthy Sports, Inc. is proud to announce the 65 players who will compete in the Collegiate Basketball Invitational in Wadsworth, Ohio, April 24-26.  Below is a listing of the players by team name (Team Sponsor), Head Coach, Assistant Coaches and Host Family.

The Collegiate Basketball Invitational (CBI) is a major national basketball event that will gather the finest 65 senior men's basketball players from all of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and Division III and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

The event will take place at Wadsworth High School in Wadsworth, Ohio, and will consist of eight teams of eight players (one team with nine players) in an eight-team tournament. Each team will play a total of three games that will be played Thursday and Friday, culminating with the championship game being played Friday night at 8 p.m. The CBI will conclude with an all-star game Saturday evening in front of a live, ESPNU audience as 20 players will be selected to play in the game.

“I sincerely congratulate the 65 players that have been selected to compete in this prestigious event,” said CBI Founder John McCarthy.  “I am very excited about these 65 players and I am proud and honored to welcome them to Wadsworth for the Collegiate Basketball Invitational.  I am confident that this class of players will help make the public aware of the high level of talent at the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA levels.”

“I would like to thank our selection committee and the many, many coaches from around the country who have shared their insights and taken their time to provide valuable information about the top seniors in the country.  With approximately 1,000 colleges and universities within these divisions, the selection of players has truly been a challenging task.  Narrowing this field to 65 players has been very difficult, as there are many other players at these levels that are very talented players of high character.  We have worked hard to handle this selection process with class and integrity.”

“The outpouring of support for this event from around the country has reinforced my faith in the value of the Collegiate Basketball Invitational.  The event is simply good for the game of basketball on several levels and this announcement makes me personally proud.”

The All-Star Game will consist of the top 20 players from among the 65 players selected to compete at the (CBI).  The players at the CBI are the top seniors from all of NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA.  At the three-day event, players will have the opportunity to compete in front of the professional team representatives, agents and national media, while competing against the best of the best from around the country.

Where Are They Now?
Following the top players from the 2007
Collegiate Basketball Invitational

By Matt Maurer

Since the beginning of professional basketball numerous players from non-Division I programs have made an impact on the game. Players such as Scottie Pippen, Charles Oakley, Dennis Rodman, Ben Wallace, Earl Monroe, Sam Jones, Ronald Murray, Devean George, and Jack Sikma are just a handful of NBA veterans with non-division one roots. And like them, the challenges players outside the Division I landscape face has been the same - lack of
publicity and perceived lack of knowledge of the quality of players. But thanks to the Collegiate Basketball Invitational, players not only get the chance to participate with the best outside of Division I, but also receive much needed publicity and the opportunity to be evaluated by professional teams in America and abroad.

The selection committee's duty to research some 955 colleges in America to identify the top 64 players and equally divide them into eight teams that are well balanced is a tall task. Selected participants are well rounded,
with several qualities taken into consideration: overall career, senior season, professional potential and, most importantly, character. What you see on the floor is a true representation of some of the nation's top amateur athletes who shine both on and off the court.

A key reward for some in this event is the chance to play in the ESPNU televised all-star game, as it may be their very first time showcasing their talents on a national stage. Last year 18 of the 20 players selected for the inaugural all-star game were offered pro contracts.

The CBI continues to quickly gain attention in the basketball community as evidenced by the multi-year commitment from ESPNU to telecast the all-star game. The event has certainly set a solid foundation and established a budding reputation as a door-opener for pro hopefuls. Players outside Division I basketball are finally getting the opportunity and coverage they truly deserve.

Who's Who Amoung 2007 CBI Alumi?

In just one year the true success of the Collegiate Basketball Invitational can be measured by looking at the 38 players that have earned professional contracts.

Stellar Standouts

Damien Lolar, the junior college transfer from Cowley College, originally committed to play for Loyola (IL), but chose Division II West Texas A&M because he felt more comfortable with the environment. In just two years Lolar joined the school's 1,000 point scorer list with 1,175 career points good for 7th all-time. At the CBI the powerfully built guard made the all-star game and evidently made an impression on NBA scouts, as Lolar was not only drafted by the NBDL's Colorado 14ers, but played the entire season with the team. In 37 games Lolar averaged 5.6 PPG and 2.5 RPG, and his just a call-up away from joining the ranks of NBA teams.

Kevin Johnson left Humboldt State as the school’s 3rd all-time scorer and 2nd all-time rebounder, and made quite an impression at the CBI earning a nod to participate in the all-star game. Johnson's play for Gmuden (Austrian top level basketball) has given the talented forward the chance
to play in one of Europe’s biggest events, the ULEB cup. The competition unites 54 various professional teams in Europe in a round-robin event. In 12 games Johnson averaged an impressive 12.3 PPG and led the team in rebounds, pulling down 9.0 a game.

While in college Zack Whiting lead the nation in assists per game, regardless of classification, and continued to showcase his talents in the CBI all-star game. At 6-3 with a blue collar attitude to the game, Whiting became the starter on Leverkusen, one of Germany’s best teams, averaging 7.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game while leading them to a second place finish in the regular season. It could be argued that Whiting has experienced the best success among CBI alumni this past season on the international playing field.

John McCarthy, Founder of the Collegiate Basketball Invitational (CBI), is proud to announce major partnerships with several business entities that help make the event possible in Wadsworth, Ohio.

“First, the host City of Wadsworth, Ohio, has been very supportive of our efforts,” said John McCarthy, Founder of the CBI. “It is really exciting to be back in my original home town for the next three years, as we can all enjoy watching the growth of the event right here in Northeast Ohio.”

Robin Laubaugh, newly appointed Mayor of Wadsworth, is excited to bring Wadsworth into the national spotlight as the host city for the CBI. “We are thrilled to once again host the Collegiate Basketball Invitational in our community,” commented Laubaugh. “Not only is this a wonderful way to showcase top notch basketball players from across the country but to also showcase our community to the nation.”

WRH Health System, who was a Team Sponsor in the inaugural year of 2007, has agreed to sponsor the All Star Game, which is a new sponsorship. The All Star Game of the Collegiate Basketball Invitational will be a live national television broadcast on ESPNU on Saturday night, April 26, at 8:00 p.m.

“The Collegiate Basketball Invitational is a great event for the Wadsworth community and an excellent opportunity for the athletes,” said Jim Pope, President & CEO of Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital. “The All Star Game showcases the tremendous talent of these players and we’re happy to be the sponsor.”

McCarthy commented, “It’s really neat to see WRH Health System step up their support for the CBI, as is it a very visible sign of their commitment to the community and to the lives of young people. They are obviously a valuable part of the Wadsworth community and it is an honor to have them as our All Star Game sponsor.”

Russell Athletic will again be the Official Apparel Sponsor of the CBI. Uniforms, coaches apparel, t-shirts and basketballs (through Spalding) will be provided by Russell. Once again, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) will sponsor the Tip Off Banquet, which will be on Wednesday, April 23, at the Galaxy in Wadsworth, Ohio. “Russell and the NABC have shown faith in us since the beginning and they are great supporters of the wonderful game of basketball. We are proud and excited to be associated with such quality people and organizations,” said McCarthy.

In addition, Winner’s Award Group will again be the Official Awards and Gift Sponsor. “Lou Chiera and his team are a fantastic group of people who have been committed to this event from the onset,” commented McCarthy. “In fact, they were the first sponsor of the event when it was a vision in my mind. They committed to the dream and helped it come true. I am sincerely grateful to Winner’s Award Group. They are very involved in athletics and business throughout the country and they are a great fit for the CBI.”
